NATIONAL TRUST AIMS TO SIGN UP SURFERS
Cornish
surf champion Robyn Davies has backed a campaign to get more surfers involved
with the National Trust. She met with trust director general Fiona Reynolds
at Crantock beach, on Friday to discuss ways of getting more surfers involved
with the organisation.
The trust is launching a campaign aimed at getting more young people to sign up as members.
In the South West it is concentrating on wooing the surf community.
Ms Davies, 31, from Porthleven, a five times British Ladies Surf Champion, said: "Even though I have surfed the coast of Cornwall all my life, I only recently realised I had been surfing on mostly National Trust beaches.
"I really love Cornwall and I feel passionately about the world we live in and how beautiful it is - but it needs work to keep that."
The surf champion believes, by joining the National Trust, surfers can help the organisation safeguard the coast.
She said: "Surfers are very in tune with nature because of the whole surfing experience. It would be a perfect opportunity to give something back. The amount of pleasure we get from the ocean and using the beach is huge."
The National Trust owns a number of Cornwall's top surfing beaches and members get free use of its car parks.
A spokesman said: "Over the past year a great deal has been done to make the work of the trust relevant to a much wider, younger and new audience.
"In this region this work has been particularly focused on the surfing community and will continue through a three year project which will enable staff to engage more closely with surfers and other water-based groups that use National Trust beaches."
A group of Surf Academy Treviglas College students brushed up on their surf skills with a training session from Ms Davies following her meeting at Crantock.
PARTNER COLLEGE STATUS @ TREVIGLAS

The Year Zero surf and business course has been accredited by the Uni of
Plymouth and the course will allow students to be allocated CAT points that
will allow progression to a university of their choice, along with the other
aspects of the course the surf academy puts students in a very strong position
when they look to apply for further education places.
Animal and the surf academy
Animal has helped the surf academy this year by providing sponsorship in the form of clothing, students are kitted out in new hoodies and t shirts with the surf academy logo.
SURF COACHING AT TREVIGLAS
As part of the course 2nd year students have been
completing Practical Sports Coaching. The module provides students
with the opportunity to use their BSA Surf coaching awards to good practice
in the completion of this BTEC Sport module.
The team worked with the Sport Academy at Treviglas college and had great fun teaching them the basics of surfing. Hats off to thegroup who had the pleasure of learning to surf in cold onshore conditions throughout the weekly sessions.
