Surf Academy team take third place in UPC surf jam!
In the recent University of Plymouth Colleges Surf event Treviglas surfers managed to take third place, with an excellent display of surfing from the likes of Kathleen Spears, Allannah Brown, Rob Harvey, Anthony 'OOAARH' and Harvey Brennan. 'OOAARH' produced some stylish surfing on the twin fin to cruise through the rounds, whilst Rob Harvey got through his heat but was disqualified for catching a wave after the hooter had sounded for the end of the heat - there really is no justice! Luckily for the team Allannah managed to take second place in the girls event, winning a nice booty bag of prizes. Overall the team were stoked to have finished in such a high place, up against some pretty serious competition.
NATIONAL TRUST AIMS TO SIGN UP SURFERS
The Surf Academy are always in the press! This story appeared in the Cornish Guardian dated 24/10/07
Cornish surf champion Robyn Davies has backed a campaign to get more surfers
involved with the National Trust. She met with trust director general Fiona
Reynolds at Crantock beach, on Friday to discuss ways of getting more surfers
involved with the organisation.
The trust is launching a campaign aimed at getting more young people to sign up as members.
In the South West it is concentrating on wooing the surf community.
Ms Davies, 31, from Porthleven, a five times British Ladies Surf Champion, said: "Even though I have surfed the coast of Cornwall all my life, I only recently realised I had been surfing on mostly National Trust beaches.
"I really love Cornwall and I feel passionately about the world we live in and how beautiful it is - but it needs work to keep that."
The surf champion believes, by joining the National Trust, surfers can help the organisation safeguard the coast.
She said: "Surfers are very in tune with nature because of the whole surfing experience. It would be a perfect opportunity to give something back. The amount of pleasure we get from the ocean and using the beach is huge."
The National Trust owns a number of Cornwall's top surfing beaches and members get free use of its car parks.
A spokesman said: "Over the past year a great deal has been done to make the work of the trust relevant to a much wider, younger and new audience.
"In this region this work has been particularly focused on the surfing community and will continue through a three year project which will enable staff to engage more closely with surfers and other water-based groups that use National Trust beaches."
A group of Surf Academy Treviglas College students brushed up on their surf skills with a training session from Ms Davies following her meeting at Crantock.
