Name: Dave Lockett

Nickname: Smooth Criminal

Standard of Surfing: Intermediate

Countries Surfed: I have only surfed in Cornwall and South Wales . I usually surf at Crantock and some beaches on the south coast. I also lived in Wales for a year where my local break was Rest Bay in Porthcawl

Years of Experience: I have been surfing for 3 years and longboarding for the last one

Best Surfing Experience: I have 2; the first was at Porthcawl on my 7ft single-fin. The sun was shining, about 3ft, it was empty and I surfed one of my best ever sessions. My second was recently at Crantock when I got my first barrel on my longboard, cross stepped further than I had before, it was about 3-4ft, peeling nicely

Worst Surfing Experience: I took a 9ft 7 heavy longboard out in a 6ft plus wave a couple of winters ago. I managed to get out back and as soon as I did I regretted it. Both me and the board didn’t work in the steep surf. I caught one and the rail dug in and I bailed. I was then churned for a while, which was nice. I then got out!

Where your from: I’m Cornish born and bread

What your on: I’ve got 2 boards. I usually ride my longboard, which is a 9ft 1 Revolver single-fin. It’s a good all rounder, with a mix between traditional and progressive style. I also have a 7ft single-fin. It’s a remake of a 70’s design that’s an amazing ride in anything between 2 and 6ft and clean

Career Aspirations: After this course I want to travel for a year with my girlfriend and ultimately want to learn how to make boards. I would love to own and run a board making company

Thoughts on the course: I’m really enjoying the course! I really like the students and the lecturers. This course has enabled me to have a career that I am passionate about!

My predicted grades: A’s (hopefully)

Advice for possible applicants: If you are passionate about surfing, then do this course! It guarantees a place on the degree at Plymouth and can help gain a career in the surfing industry!
