160 Future surf stars shine at Animal Cornish Schools Surf Championship
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 November, 2008 : - - The 2008 Animal Cornish Schools Surfing Championships was met with solid surf for the sixth year running, further reinforcing the view that this event provides a perfect showcase for the best surfing talent that Cornwall has to offer.
With over 160 competitors taking part from Bude to Penzance descending on Tolcarne beach in Newquay, Saturday morning almost had a festival atmosphere and the surf ranged from 3 - 5 foot over the two day period, providing challenging conditions for overall comp winner Leon Mansfield.
Saturday morning was blessed with 3 foot clean waves rolling into Newquay bay. Early standout performances included Treviglas' Ben Bennett in the under 16s, with the Constantine surfer beginning to make an impact on the competition scene. Ben's casual mature style combined with the ability to bust out big airs will surely see him become one of the up and coming UK junior surfers.
However Ben's hot form wasn't quite enough in a closely fought semi-final, meaning the honour went instead to Leon Mansfield who distinguished himself from the other finalists by his commitment to big manoeuvres in critical sections of the wave. Closely behind Leon was Tom Good, another Tretherras surfer who has become a standout of junior UK surfing.
In the U14 final Jobe Harris from Budehaven proved that his win at the regional Schools Sports Partnership event was no fluke as he went all the way to take the crown ahead of Luke Dillon. In the Bodyboard event Roseland's Steven Hall displayed the sort of form that had him crowned British Bodyboard champion recently.
The standard of female surfing in this country has risen yet again demonstrated by the performances seen over the weekend - Jaide Rowe from Tretherras outpointed her fellow finalists with a promising style and one to look out for in the future! It was great to see that Cornwall can run such a unique surf event, with the event organised by the students of the Surf Academy@Treviglas.
Katie O'Neill, Animal marketing coordinator said, 'The Animal Surf Academy has been set up as proof of Animal's commitment to UK surfing. Getting behind events like the Cornish Schools Surf Championships is a great way of making sure we can spot up the future UK surf stars on our doorstep, as well as encouraging youngsters to get active and make the most of the local coast line.'
Surf Academy director Ellis Attwell said 'I am so proud of the students for their tireless commitment in organising this fantastic event that offers a wonderful two days of competition that celebrates surfing across the County.
I must also give a massive thanks to the teachers that gave up their freetime, the parents for supporting the event and of course Animal, Ginsters and Overhead Surf Shop for their financial commitment to the future of Cornish Surfing. Cornish surfers will aim to put in top class performances at this weekend's county schools' surf championships. More than 150 pupils from 14 schools will compete for the honours at Tolcarne Beach, in Newquay.
Defending champions Tretherras School, from Newquay will face tough opposition from Treviglas Community College and St Ives School.
The school's event takes place as part of the Animal British Cup, which is a selection contest for the 2008 British surf team.
This year the schools will be battling it out even harder for a chance to win a unique top prize, of a day's surf coaching with pro surfer Alan Stokes later in the year.
This exclusive opportunity will give the winning school a rare chance to learn from one of Britain's top surfers and develop their surfing skills.
Ellis Attwell, Surf Academy@Treviglas director said:
"The Cornish Schools is unique in bringing together surfers of all standards from across the county, with the ethos on accessibility and fun for all - whilst ensuring that top level, serious surfing in our schools can still be celebrated.
"I would like to say a massive thank you to all those involved for their commitment to grassroots level surfing in this country. Without their help this event would not be possible."
The Surf Academy is unique in being the only surfing based post-16 course in the country.
Organising The Cornish Schools Surfing Championships, undertaking 'A' levels in Sport and Tourism, completing University modules and gaining practical qualifications such as lifeguard and BSA surf coaching awards are all achieved by the students.
Many students are eligible for financial assistance towards accommodation and travel expenses due to the unique nature of the course. They graduate after two years with career paths typically split between the option of guaranteed places at Plymouth University or a successful career in the Leisure Industry.
The Animal British Cup will be attracting the UK's top surf pro's with a double attraction of a share of the £4,000 prize purse, and being part of a series of events used by the British Surfing Association to select the members of the 2008 British Surf Team.
